Guys Let's Go In the House, What Could Go Wrong?

Sarah Vaughn & Lan Medina “Deadman: Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love” (DC Comics, 2017)

The internet being the internet, it seems that all anyone wants to talk about is the presence of a non-binary character. Sigh. It’s so predictable.

How about we talk about this comic, which happens to be the best Deadman comic I’ve ever read!
Sarah Vaughn takes Deadman away from the superhero world entirely, and inserts him into a fairly traditional Gothic haunted house story. It’s an idea that seems so obvious that you would think that it was overdone, but I honestly don’t think I’ve ever read this sort of Deadman story.

Lan Medina’s art is a secret weapon. It’s deeply atmospheric and evocative, and adds at least as much as Sarah Vaughn’s story. Jose Villarrubia’s colors also deserve a shout out, as the deep saturations provide a certain Gothic touch (think of the visuals from Crimson Peak for comparison).

This is a brilliant limited run on Deadman that makes a third or fourth string character eminently compelling. More like this please!

Thanks to NetGalley and DC Comics for a review copy.
