Yoon Ha Lee “Ninefox Gambit” (Solaris, 2016)
Wow. Wow.
Maybe once a year I happen upon a book that at first feels
like you’re plunged into a cold pool. It’s
overwhelming, & you are just scrambling to keep your head above water. But before you know it the environment makes
sense, & you find you enjoy the water temperature.
Think The Quantum
Thief or Ancillary Justice.
Strange and exotic societies that don’t initially make any
sense to you. That is the future.
Ninefox Gambit
delivers this sort of complex exotic future universe without making compromises
for the audience.
This is MilSF unlike any that I’ve ever read. The norm seems to be something based on
historical American/English/French military, while this is more derived from
Korean (?) contexts.
I went from what the hell? To obsessed in a ridiculously short
amount of time.
I am so excited that this is the start of a new series.
