Gina Wohlsdorf “Security” (Algonquin Books, 2016)
Maybe I’ve watched too much genre entertainment, but when I’m
introduced to a fantastic state of the art building that is about to open, I
know that people are going to die.
Surprise! They do!
What we have here is a literary attempt to write a slasher
novel (do they still use the term Splatterpunk?) While I’ve seen some rave
reviews of this, for me it just never quite happened.
Maybe it was the tone of the piece which felt
distancing. Maybe it was just a bit too
classy & I needed to it to be a bit trashier.
