Jovana Babovic, “Sleater-Kinney’s Dig Me Out” (Bloomsbury
Academic, 2016)
I’ve read a bunch of these 33 1/3 books by now. You really never know for sure what you’re
going to get with them. That’s the
beauty and the madness of the series.
But you have to try to accept the books on their own terms.
This slim volume on Dig
Me Out is written by a historian.
And it functions as a look at the end of the riot grrl movement and its
incorporation into the wider world of rock music.
It’s an interesting look at an interesting time, and I think
that in the future this book will seem more valuable.
It’s not a book that focuses on the music, or session
details. Again, Babovic is a historian,
not a musician or a musicologist.
