Hope Larsen & Raphael Albuquerque “Batgirl, Volume 1:
Beyond Burnside” (DC Comics, 2017)
Babs takes her show on the road, leaves Gotham and backpacks
through Asia. She meets and hooks up
with a guy from her high school days (?!), and stumbles across some costumed
villains, the way that superheroes tend to do.
This isn’t a bad stretch of comics, but I would really
struggle to find things in particular to recommend them. The writing and art
are certainly very good. It’s just that the villains seems inconsequential and
the side characters are boring at best. Maybe development of one or the other
would be an answer?
If you are a fan of the book, by all means you should read
on. If you are looking for a new book to pick up, there’s no real reason to
select this over quite a few other titles.
Let’s hope the book picks up in the next arc.
