Cullen Bunn & Brian Hurtt, “The Damned, Vol 1: Three
Days Dead” (Oni Press, 2017)
It’s a mobster story, only it turns out that the mobsters
are LITERALLY demons. Get it? Yeah, the elevator pitch is anything but subtle.
Apparently Bunn has been writing this supernatural noir for
quite some time, and that may explain the lack of complexity to the setup.
It’s not that this was a bad book, but it just felt paper
thin. Characters seemed too archetypical, without much making them memorable or
unique. There have been a ton of urban fantasies written in the last 10 years
that blend Noir tropes with fantasy elements. This does nothing to stand out of
the pack.
I would recommend it for hardcore fans only.
