Kevin Hearne “The Purloined Poodle” (Subterranean Press,
2016)
Right up front you need to know that if you are not familiar
with Hearne’s Iron Druid series, you will not have any idea what is going on
here. You don’t need to be a hardcore
fan, just have a passing familiarity with the characters and the world.
This is a tasty little meatball of a novella that is told
from the perspective of Oberon, the titular Iron Druid’s Irish Wolfhound. And Druids have a telepathic link to their
dog, so yes, there is dialogue, thank you very much!
As you might expect, a story from the standpoint of a man’s
dog is highly comedic in nature. I think that plays to Hearne’s strength. He’s a very talented comedic author, and this
gives him an excuse to really have some fun.
It’s a cozy mystery of a Urban Fantasy. Why more people are trying this sort of thing
I have no idea. I had a great time.
Now I need to go grill some sausage.
