Seanan McGuire “Half-Off
Ragnarok” (DAW, 2014)
This is the third book in McGuire’s InCryptid series. For a change of pace, this time the story is
about Alex Price, another sibling in the family. He’s doing research in Ohio when people start
turning to stone.
By now you should know what to expect from Seanan
McGuire. It’s state of the art urban
fantasy – inventive use of the tropes with none of the stuff that makes you
feel icky. And here McGuire does what she
does. If anything, that’s my real
complaint about this book. While I appreciate how switching narrators is a
brave move inside a series, I can’t help but feel like McGuire isn’t exactly
stretching. The InCryptid books are
great fun. But I would like to see a bit
more ambition from McGuire’s writing.
